About RAFTING & GUIDING on the RIVER!
Movies about rafting can be a ridiculous Hollywood fantasy or a docu-drama of silliness.

"The African Queen" starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn was based on the C.S. Forester novel. This movie is #17 on the American Institute of Film list of 100 greatest movies. Set in a war-torn African jungle, two diametrically opposed people find each other in this famous movie. The river scenes are quite beautiful, but the most memorable scene is the leeches! Even by today's standards with "Fear Factor" being the definitive gross-out show, the African Queen leech scene gives the viewer a shudder and chill!

"Deliverance" released in 1972, starred the ever sexy and buffed Burt Reynolds and equally alluring, Jon Voigt. Ned Beaty also stars. Four buddies from the city head into Georgia for a rafting trip down the river. Local hillbillies rape a member of the group and a murder occurs. Another creepy river trip! Reynolds and Voigt make this film memorable as this is probably the most famous river rafting movie of all time! The music in this film "Dueling Banjos" was in the Top 10 and was arranged and performed by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel. After watching this movie, I'm not sure how many people ever want to go on river rafting trips again!

W.E.T. Note: One of our guides actually met Burt Reynolds at some sort of event. Mr. Reynolds actually autographed a Deliverance poster for our office! He was really cool & very accommodating and gave us the poster to hang! Very nice man.

More Movies about Rafting:

"The River Wild" is a super creepy movie with Kevin Bacon and Meryl Streep. David Strathairn and Joseph Mazello also star. This creepy movie is about a mom and her kids and how they fight off a crazed madman on the river. Kelly Katafatich, a local Coloma river guide was the stunt double for Meryl Streep. The rafting sequences are awesome except that Hollywood shows them boating over Class VI rapids! This is one of those movies that definitely has the "creep" factor!

"The Undertow" released in 2003 is a campy horror film about a bunch of teens in a small town. Emily Haack, Julie Farrar and Trudy Baquette star in this not-made-to-be-funny but is hysterical movie directed by Jeremy Wallace. The director has fun with this slasher movie. Full of brutal, backwoods gore! Horror awaits them while swimming and rafting...a must see for those of you planning on river rafting. Watch it the night before you go California whitewater rafting!

"Damn River" is the campiest film yet. Hard to find and equally hard to stomache, this is a film that all rafters and paddlers should watch with a beer in one hand and a handkerchief in the other (not for tears). One of the characters is unforgettable and has had quotes attributed to him by many guides! In the immortal words of River Rat Ray, ...Get on the damned boat, funs over!" Definitely not for kids!
