A rafting story by a river guide caught in rafting hell!

CONTINUED FROM Rafting Story

My car was racing to the cliff's end. Faster and faster until.... sailing through the sky, my mouth agape with fright, a scream pierced the air and then plunging, plunging, plunging................

My eyes flew open. Beating fiercely, my heart pounded through my body until I realized the blue skies were above me and the hard ground below. It was cold and my nose ached with the chill. I had overslept again. A dull chattering arose above the roar of the river. Turning my head, the familiar smell of a hundred awakening guides stung my nose. Again, I had bedded down in that Tijuana bathroom. I was up. Orange juice and stale bear claws made me less hungry, and we proceeded to pump up the remaining rafts. Shivering, I volunteered to pump. Soon perspiration enveloped me, and I plunged into the nearby eddy. Mistake. A ton of bricks and a Mac truck slammed my head until my vision blurred. I am sure I lost a few brain cells in that one cold, collegiate act. A good excuse for a short break.

Two hours later, we were still packing and unpacking. Waterproof bags were cool, but they were almost pack-proof from all the forgetful items that one always seems to leave behind. Finally, packed and loaded, we were on our way. Class III- IV action; swift water for about two miles and then a large eddy. According to our maps, we were above KILLER FANG FALLS; another gruesomely descriptive name for God's watery wonderment. We scouted. The kayakers among us shrugged their shoulders and blew us a kiss. They were off. One by one, skirting the first hole and lining up for the big one. The kayakers cut through the wave, and one, spinning his paddle, managed a photogenic smile towards shore. Relief. They were through safely which meant that the rafts would have some kayak support at the bottom of the rapids. I cinched my jacket and fished through my ammo box for some nose plugs. Swimming, I like, but nose enemas, I hate. We walked down to the rafts in silence. Rafts have less manueverability and we'd definitely have to skirt both holes or risk flipping ten people's gear. I climbed into the raft and automatically touched my crucifix. We would run the hole.

Above the rapid, we glided on crystalline waters that disappeared dramatically over Coumbus' edge. A rolling motion started, and my eyes came close to tears watching that most perfect wave. A Zen breath in and I pushed the oars toward the edge. We were in it. White crashing waves, frothing with immaculate fang-like teeth, came gnashing and biting at the small boat. I was straight. Taking a little too much off the first hole, the raft suddenly spun around and I was still straight but facing upstream. Pulling hard and even harder, I angled neatly away from the gaping mouth in time to spin the boat around and pierce three beautiful v-waves in a row.

This story was written by a retired guide. He combined several rafting trips in this one story. The rivers were the Tuolumne in Yosemite, the North Fork American near Sacramento, the Illinois River in Oregon, the Cal Salmon in Northern California, Colorado in the Grand Canyon and other Northern, Central California rivers.

Most of this story is an exaggerated, sarcastic scenario; but, there is definitely an element of truth when guides get together and raft on their own. Private boating is a different rafting trip entirely from the commercial side of river trips. On the commercial trips, safety becomes the highest priority for the rafting company. Otherwise, river rafting companies would not be in business!
