500 River Trips in One By AB Mbodez
A rafting story by a river guide caught in rafting hell!

CONTINUED FROM Rafting Story-Part 2

... Pulling hard and even harder, I angled neatly away from the gaping mouth in time to turn the boat around and pierce three beautiful v-waves in a row.

The trip was uneventful. Each rapid had boat-eating holes, but this was a private rafting trip, so we ran everything. We had one lay-over day and spent it in an enormous meadow wallowing in beer, chocolate and playing golf. We shared one 9-iron among ten of us and knocked a ball made of duct tape around until it deformed and unraveled. Watching the grey mist hang languidly above the trees, my thoughts took me to many a past river trip. Always the same mist in the spring, and always, the hypnotic river. What state, what river, what year?

The usual nagging started at dinnertime. The carrots weren't cut right. THAT'S THE WRONG COLLER, IDIOT and I CAN'T BELIEVE IT...YOU FORGOT THE SPICES. The production started slowly, and soon the kayakers came to help after a million rodeo tricks were performed. They came dripping with a mixture of river and suntan lotion; grabbing at onions, zucchini and chopping boards. A fight ensued over the sharpest knife, and finally, someone offered to sharpen them all. Another good reason for a break.

I lay back on my self-inflating mattress pad and was soon lost in my thoughts. A sudden hissing next to my ear warned of the immenent deflation of my one portable comfort. Arising, I smelled garlic. The only spice we brought. At least our bodies will be cleansed during this river trip. The line formed quickly and somehow, towards the end of the line, I managed a spoonful of dinner onto my plate. Hogs. Next time I'll be first. They can wash the dishes.

The tequila came first and then the beer chasers, and soon a comfortable fire crackled next to my feet. The night air was crisp, clean and bone-chilling cold. All around were polyester, fleece bundles huddled together emitting that putrid Tijuana bathroom smell. The tequila warmed slowly and soon the bundles separated, danced and told stories. All river stories. Stories of monster holes, near-death-hair-boating, and of course, first descents. Then the "slam" stories of geeky passengers, commercial rafting trips full of love affairs and outfitters who don't pay enough. One by one, each slipped away to undo their dry bags, drag out their sleepings bags and drift off to sleep. My sleeping bag was wet. Yuck. And soon, that too, will smell like a Tijuana john.

Morning came at four o'clock AM in the form of large rain drops soaking my head. OH SH#&!, came from us in unison and suddenly I was crawling under the camp table for shelter. Another epic journey. Sleep... somewhere I heard the distant mutterings and shuffling of tents and tarps going up... Sleep... sweet sleep...

They had me tied to the jig. Closer and closer I moved towards the saw. I was screaming and my head burst into a million fragments as the saw ground into my brain...

This story was written by a retired guide. He combined several rafting trips in this one story. The rivers were the Tuolumne in Yosemite, the North Fork American near Sacramento, the Illinois River in Oregon, the Cal Salmon in Northern California, Colorado in the Grand Canyon and other Northern, Central California rivers.

Most of this story is an exaggerated, sarcastic scenario; but, there is definitely an element of truth when guides get together and raft on their own. Private boating is a different rafting trip entirely from the commercial side of river trips. On the commercial trips, safety becomes the highest priority for the rafting company. Otherwise, river rafting companies would not be in business!
