Most frequent questions and answers about our white water rafitng trips.

Upon arrival, you’ll each receive a personal flotation device, helmet and paddle. We’ll also include an outrageously fun, experienced, entertaining and professional raft guide!

All trips (aside from our half day “Express” trips) include a build your own deli style lunch. For two-day trips, you’ll also receive dinner, breakfast and one night of tent camping.

**Wetsuits with paddle jackets can be rented for Spring trips. Please reserve in advance.

If this is your first rafting experience, we’d recommend the South Fork American River. For those who want a bit more thrill, we’d suggest the Middle Fork or North Fork trip. Our combo trips are perfect for those wanting the most action and time on the water, and a Middle Fork two-day trip offers the true wilderness experience.

While we’re happy to advise you on which trip best suits your needs, the decision is ultimately up to you!

The classification of rapids is based on the difficulty to safely maneuver through them and the risk of injury due to swimming. Here’s a breakdown:

Class III:
Ages: 7 and up

Novice to Intermediate

Moderate Physical Activity

Medium whitewater. Exciting and challenging, but suitable for first-timers. Great for large groups and families.

Class IV
Ages: 14 and up

Intermediate

Moderate Physical Activity

Medium to difficult whitewater containing more action and more intricate maneuvers. Great choice for adventurous kids and adults. Rapids have swift currents and bigger drops. Active paddling required.

Class V
Ages: 14 and up

Advanced

Vigorous Physical Activity

Medium to very difficult whitewater requiring constant maneuvering, lots of action. Best for enthusiastic rafters seeking maximum excitement. Rapids contain steep, technical drops and long, fast wave trains.

Even in the driest of years, the American Rivers offer guaranteed flows (thanks to the dams upstream). During springtime however, participants should generally anticipate higher than normal flows.

Please contact us for more specific information about water level predictions. We are excited to assist you with selecting the best trip and time of year for your rafting adventure!

Though unlikely, your guides will have the experience to deal with any ailments or medical situations that may arise. We carry comprehensive First Aid kits, communication equipment, and we have the ability to evacuate when necessary.

Our minimum age limit on the South Fork trip is 7 years old. Middle Fork and North Fork trips have an age requirement of 14.

We can assure you that all of our guides are highly-trained professionals, with an average of at least 10 years of experience. In fact, we’ve long been known on the American River as the company with the most experienced guides. With certifications in Advanced First Aid, CPR and Advanced Swiftwater Rescue, you can feel confident that you are in great hands on your rafting adventure.

A water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses with Chums or strap, waterproof camera (optional) and any medications you may require.

That’s it!

Unfortunately, we do not allow you to wear your own life jacket or helmet on our guided adventures. Our rafting safety equipment is specific to commercial use, and our liability does not cover personal safety gear. Your safety is our top priority!

Feel free to bring a waterproof camera that can be fastened to your life jacket. However, we encourage you to keep in mind that you will be paddling in rapids – no time for pictures here! While some of our helmets do have GoPro mounts, we advise you to use at your own risk. We also offer action camera packages that include video for the perspective of the guide as well as one looking back for your reaction to the rapids! These video tend to have a much better perspective and quality.

Nope! You are going to get wet throughout your trip, and so will anything you bring with you on the raft. Feel free to leave towels and dry cloths in your car for after the trip.

Although knowing how to swim is not a prerequisite for our South or Middle Fork trips, we recommend you have a decent level of comfort with moving water for the North Fork trip. For safety, all of our guests are outfitted with the very best life jackets at all times. Our guides will always ensure that your personal flotation devices fit properly and are adjusted correctly.

No need to worry, there are no Olympic-like requirements for rafting! This activity welcomes all levels of fitness and ability.

We prefer to keep you in the raft, while also providing some excitement! Rest assured, we have the skills and knowledge to provide you with the experience of your choice; we always do our best to keep those who are apprehensive in the raft, though we’re also able to spice things up for groups that are looking for an adrenaline rush.

While no one can absolutely guarantee that you won’t have an “out-of-boat” experience, falling out of the raft remains the exception, not the rule. If you do fall out, 99% of the time you will pop up right next to the raft and we will pull you in before you know it. (Disclaimer: Even in the raft, you will still get wet!)

It is important for any parent to understand what to expect on a rafting trip, and to choose the classification of river they are comfortable with. Children (7 years and older) can utilize the middle seats of our rafts for holding on through rapids, lessening their chances of falling out.

Everything we do in a day has a certain level of risk, but compared to other activities rafting is very safe! While rafting is often associated with being a dangerous, risky activity only suited for adrenaline junkies, we can assure you that is certainly not the case. Some studies on risk in whitewater rafting have shown it to be comparable to or less risky than traveling by car! We maintain an outstanding safety record, and your safety is our number one priority both on and off the river. From our world-class certified professional guides, to our equipment, helmets and more, we are proud to set the standard for safety in whitewater rafting.

Nope! Rafting is a great team activity for all experience levels, and many of our guests are first-time rafters. Our highly-trained guides will provide you with all the necessary skills and information to have a safe and enjoyable experience. We have a feeling you’ll be hooked!

PLANNING YOUR TRIP

In order to ensure the trip & date you want, book 1-2 months ahead for peak season Saturdays (June-August) and at least 2 weeks for shoulder season (April-May, September-October). Popular weekends fill fast, especially Saturdays. Mid-week trips (Tuesday-Thursday) have better availability. Last-minute bookings sometimes work if minimums are met—call us at 888-723-8938 to check real-time availability. Our unique 12:30 pm Gorge Express makes afternoon departures easy for Bay Area guests!

The South Fork American River is perfect for beginners! Class II-III rapids are exciting but not overwhelming. Our half-day Gorge Express (12:30 pm start) is ideal—short, sweet, action-packed, and you’re home by dinner. Full-day South Fork trips add more rapids and a riverside lunch. Families with kids 7+ love it. Once you’ve conquered South Fork, try the Middle Fork for bigger Class IV thrills!

Half-day trips (3-4 hours on water) hit the best rapids with no lunch break—perfect for time-crunched families or those wanting to test rafting without a full-day commitment. Our 12:30 pm Gorge Express is unique—we’re the only outfitter offering afternoon starts! Full-day trips (5-7 hours) cover more river miles, include riverside lunch, and offer a complete immersive experience. Both are excellent—half-day for convenience, full-day for value and adventure.

Choose based on your adventure level: Family-friendly fun? South Fork American. Bigger Class IV challenge? Middle Fork. Expert-level intensity? North Fork. Want overnight immersion? Try our 2-day trips. Bay Area convenience? Our 12:30 pm departures mean no 6 am wake-ups. Not sure? Use our “Trip Finder” to compare options and find your perfect trip. Or, contact us—we’ll help you find the perfect fit!

Absolutely! Many guests raft the South Fork one day and the Middle Fork the next for a “California River Sampler.” We offer Combination 2-Day trips for exactly this. Perfect for long weekends or visiting families. Book online or call 888-723-8938 to coordinate. Stay in nearby Placerville, Auburn, or Coloma between trips. We’ll help you create a two-day itinerary with local recommendations!

Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled meeting time to check in, use restrooms, and get fitted for gear. Meeting times vary by trip—your confirmation email has exact details. Late arrivals may miss their trip with no refund. Plan for Bay Area traffic if coming from San Francisco (2 hours to South Fork) or Sacramento traffic. Pro tip: Our 12:30 pm Gorge Express lets you sleep in!

All trips start and end at the same location. South Fork trips meet at Camp Lotus (5461 Bassi Rd., Lotus, CA 95651). Middle Fork/North Fork trips meet at Raley’s Shopping Center in Auburn (13384 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603). We provide all shuttle transportation from meeting points to put-in/take-out locations. Your pre-trip email includes detailed driving directions and what to expect!

From San Francisco, South Fork is 2 hours, and Middle/North Fork is 2 hours. From Sacramento: South Fork is 45 minutes, Middle/North Fork is 2 hours. Factor in traffic, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Our 12:30 pm Gorge Express makes South Fork a convenient day trip from the Bay Area—leave late morning, home by dinner!

Half-day trips last 3-4 hours on the water. Full-day trips last 5-7 hours, including lunch. Two-day trips include overnight camping. Plan your full day, including check-in (15 min early), safety briefing, shuttle time, and return shuttle. Example: Our 12:30 pm Gorge Express runs 12:30 pm-4:30 pm total. Full-day trips starting at 8-30 am – 9:30 am typically finish by 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm. Always add buffer time for traffic!

Peak season is June-August with warm weather and reliable flows, but we run April-September! Spring (April-May) offers high water, big rapids, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds—wetsuits provided free. Fall (September) has warm water, beautiful lighting, and often better wildlife viewing. Mid-week trips (Tuesday-Thursday) offer the best river-to-yourself experience. Our unique 12:30 pm afternoon starts mean you can sleep in!

WHAT TO BRING & WEAR

Wear a swimsuit as a base layer, with shorts and a t-shirt over top. Choose quick-dry synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon)—NOT cotton, which stays cold when wet. Secure footwear required: tennis shoes or river sandals with ankle straps (Teva, Keen, Chaco). NO FLIP-FLOPS! Bring sunglasses with a neck strap, sunscreen, lip balm, and a hat to wear under your helmet. In spring/fall or cold weather, we provide wetsuits free when air + water temp is under 120°F.

Wetsuits are provided FREE when required for safety (spring/fall, high water, or when air temp + water temp < 120°F). South Fork and Middle Fork water is 55°F year-round, so wetsuits are free if the high air temp is below 65°F. You can also rent wetsuits ($10/day) even when not required if you prefer extra warmth. Reserve wetsuits in advance when completing your online waiver—include your height and weight so we have your size ready!

Bring quick-dry clothing, secure footwear (tennis shoes or strapped sandals), sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, and a water bottle. Leave valuables at home or locked in your vehicle—we’ve never had a break-in at our meeting locations. On South Fork trips, we lock your keys in a secure room. On other rivers, keys stay in the locked shuttle vehicle with our driver. Your trip confirmation includes a complete packing list!

Don’t bring anything you wouldn’t want wet or lost: wallets, purses, phones without waterproof cases, jewelry, expensive sunglasses without straps, cotton clothing, or valuable cameras (unless waterproof). Remember Murphy’s Law: what you don’t want to get wet will get wet! We’ve never had vehicle break-ins at our meeting locations, so leave valuables locked in your car

Only if it’s in a reliable waterproof case AND attached with a lanyard. Phones regularly fall out of pockets in rapids—we’ve seen hundreds lost to the river. If you must bring it, use a quality waterproof case (Lifeproof, Otterbox) and secure it with a neck lanyard. Better option: leave it in your car and buy our GoPro video package ($50-100) for worry-free footage

Absolutely! Many guests bring GoPros, waterproof cameras, or phones in waterproof cases. We have helmets with GoPro mounts available upon request (mention when booking). However, we can’t guarantee mount condition/adhesive quality—use at your own risk. Secure all cameras with wrist straps or tethers. Remember: what goes on the river may get wet or lost!

BRING BOTH! You’ll be on the water for hours with intense sun reflection—sunburns happen fast. Use waterproof, reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+) and reapply frequently. For sunglasses, you MUST have a neck strap—unattached sunglasses will fly off in rapids. Prescription glasses also need straps. Alternatively, wear a baseball cap and skip sunglasses. We provide helmets that offer some sun protection.

Yes! Water bottles are essential. We recommend bringing at least one 1-liter bottle—insulated bottles work great for hot days. All our rafts have mesh bags for water bottles and sunscreen that’s accessible while you’re paddling. Stay hydrated out there!

Nope! You’re going to get wet throughout your trip, and so will anything on the raft. Leave towels and dry clothes in your car for after the trip. Trust us, there’s nothing like that first sip of cold water and putting on dry clothes after an epic day on the river!

SAFETY & REQUIREMENTS

Yes, when conducted by professional outfitters like WET River Trips. Fun fact: it’s far more likely you’ll get injured driving to your rafting trip than on it! We’ve operated for 40+ years with an excellent safety record. Our guides are trained in swift-water rescue, wilderness first aid, and CPR. We provide commercial-grade rafts, life jackets, and helmets. That said, whitewater rafting is an outdoor adventure sport with inherent risks—that’s what makes it exciting! We manage risk through expert guides, quality equipment, and thorough safety briefings.

No. Swimming ability isn’t required, but you must be comfortable in water. All participants wear US Coast Guard-approved life jackets that keep you afloat. However, if you fall out of the raft, you’ll be in moving water—guides are trained in swift-water rescue and will quickly get you back in. If you’re nervous about water, mention this when booking, and we’ll pair you with an experienced guide who can provide extra reassurance.

Minimum ages vary by river difficulty: South Fork American is 7+, Middle Fork American is 12+, North Yuba/North Fork American is 16+. These minimums ensure safety and positive experiences. Exceptions are rare but possible—contact us if your child is close to the age limit and has rafting experience. We prioritize both safety and ensuring kids don’t have negative experiences.

The South Fork requires an age of 7 minimum for safety and enjoyment. Class II-III rapids can be intense for very young children. If your child turns 7 soon or has rafting experience, call us at 888-723-8938—our owner may grant an exception based on maturity and swimming ability.

Rafters must fit securely into our life jackets with all buckles fastened—maximum torso circumference is 57 inches. If you’re over 300 lbs, please call us at 888-723-8938 before booking so we can discuss fit and safety. We want everyone to have a safe, comfortable experience. These aren’t arbitrary limits—they’re based on the safety equipment we can provide. No maximum age limit—healthy guests in their 80s and 90s safely raft with us!

We don’t recommend rafting while pregnant due to jarring impacts, risk of falls, and wilderness location far from medical facilities. Even gentle Class II rapids involve bumps and bounces. Your safety and your baby’s health are paramount. Consider booking for after your pregnancy—rafting will still be here, and you’ll enjoy it more without worry! Questions? Consult your doctor and call us at 888-723-8938.

When booking, please inform us of any medical condition, physical disability, or allergy requiring special attention. Obtain your physician’s written approval if you have diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, heart conditions, etc. While we accommodate most conditions, it’s best to know in advance and be prepared. Questions about particular conditions? Call us at 888-723-8938—we’re here to help!

Rafting requires moderate effort—paddling, staying balanced, and occasional short walks. You don’t need to be highly athletic, but basic mobility and comfort with outdoor activity are helpful. It’s a team sport, and your guide does most of the navigating. Most first-timers finish saying it wasn’t as hard as they expected! Specific concerns? Contact us.

That’s completely normal! Many first-timers feel nervous. Our guides specialize in helping guests feel confident—we explain each rapid, set clear expectations, and support nervous paddlers throughout. We can even walk around rapids if needed. Most nervous folks finish saying it was their favorite part of the trip. Trust your guide, focus on breathing, and remember: thousands do this safely every year!

ON THE RIVER

Swimming (falling out) occasionally happens—it’s part of the adventure! Your life jacket keeps you afloat. If you swim, assume the “safe swimmer” position: feet downstream, on your back, arms out. Your guide will quickly pull you back in or direct you to shore. Most “swims” last 10-30 seconds. Guides are trained in swift-water rescue. Kids often say swimming was their favorite part! Stay calm, follow your guide’s instructions, and enjoy the rush.

We prefer to keep you in the raft while providing excitement! Rest assured, we have the skills to provide the experience you want. We always do our best to keep nervous folks in the raft, while we can spice things up for groups looking for an adrenaline rush. While no one can guarantee you won’t have an “out-of-boat experience,” falling out remains the exception, not the rule. Even in the raft, you’ll still get wet!

Children (7+) can use the middle seats of our rafts for extra stability through rapids, lessening their chances of falling out. It’s important to understand what to expect and choose the river classification you’re comfortable with. Our guides are pros at keeping younger paddlers safe and having fun!

Your guide prioritizes your safety and comfort. If you’re nervous, tell them—they’ll provide extra instruction, coaching, and reassurance. Guides can walk around dangerous rapids if needed. However, once you’re on the river, you’re committed to finishing the route—there’s no early exit. We’ve never had someone too scared to complete a trip. Trust your guide and remember: thousands do this safely every year!

No, rivers flow downhill—you raft downstream from put-in to take-out. We shuttle you from our meeting location to the put-in (start), you raft downstream, and we shuttle you from the take-out back to your vehicle at the meeting location. Most trips cover 10-21 river miles. That’s why we handle shuttles—you’d need two vehicles otherwise. It’s all included in your trip price!

Depth varies from a few feet in shallow sections to 10-15+ feet in pools. You’ll rarely touch bottom except when swimming in calm areas. Guides know every deep hole and shallow riffle. In rapids, depth doesn’t matter—you’re focused on the waves and rocks! If you fall out, your life jacket keeps you floating. Trust your guide’s knowledge of every river feature.

Rivers are rated Class I-V. Class I is calm, Class II has small waves, Class III has moderate rapids (South Fork), Class IV has large rapids requiring precise maneuvering (Middle Fork, North Fork), and Class V is expert-only extreme rapids. We match rivers to your ability and appetite for adventure. First-timers start on South Fork; experienced rafters love Middle/North Fork challenges. For more information, see “Class III, IV, and V!? What does it all mean?

The South Fork offers exciting Class III rapids ideal for families and first-timers. The Middle Fork features more technical Class IV rapids and deeper canyon scenery, better suited for adventure seekers or experienced rafters. Both are professionally guided and safety-focused. Want both? Try our Combination 2-Day trip!

Class IV rapids feature swift currents, powerful waves, and significant drops—definitely more challenging than Class III. While previous whitewater experience is preferred, athletic, fit, and adventurous beginners can navigate Class IV environments like the Middle Fork under our expert guides’ supervision. Nervous? Build confidence on the South Fork first!

While beginners are welcome, the Middle Fork 2-Day involves sustained Class IV rapids and requires reasonable fitness and comfort with physical activity. It’s best suited for adventurous guests ready for a challenge. Unsure if it’s right for you? Contact us, and we’ll help assess fit!

We raft rain or shine! You’re getting wet anyway—rain just adds to the adventure. We only cancel for extreme high water. If we cancel due to weather for some reason, you get a full refund or a free reschedule. Bring a positive attitude and remember: there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices (we provide wetsuits if needed!).

We monitor water levels daily and only run trips when safe and fun. Dam-controlled rivers (South Fork, Middle Fork) have reliable flows all season. If we cancel due to conditions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule. We’ve been running rivers for 40+ years—we know what works! See “Will there be enough water” for more information.

Our guides are world-class professionals trained in Advanced First Aid, CPR, and Advanced Swiftwater Rescue—well above minimum California standards. They average 15+ years of river experience. We’re one of the only companies owned by a professional guide still guiding at the highest level. Comprehensive first aid kits and emergency communication devices are on every raft. You’re in good hands!

Meeting locations typically have cell service for check-in. Once on the river, expect limited to no service—that’s part of the magic! Multi-day wilderness trips have no service. Embrace the digital detox! Need to be reachable for emergencies? Leave our office number (888-723-8938) with family. We have satellite communication for true emergencies.

Absolutely! We can set up split-payment reservations so each participant pays independently and securely for their portion. No single person has to collect funds from everyone—perfect for large families, corporate teams, and social groups. Contact us to set this up!

Yes! To reserve a private raft (only your group), you pay for one less than full raft capacity: 5 people for Middle/North Fork/North Yuba (6-person rafts), or 7 people for South Fork (8-person rafts). This guarantees only your group in your raft, though other groups may be on the river. For completely private trips, email [email protected]—we can arrange custom dates for larger groups.

Coloma is the birthplace of the California Gold Rush! Visit Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, where gold was discovered in 1848. Try gold panning (we can point you to great spots!), explore historic sites, enjoy riverside picnics, or relax at local cafes. Camp Lotus (our South Fork meeting point) offers swimming, volleyball, and a great convenience store. It’s a charming little river town!

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS

Yes, we provide all necessary shuttles! Trips start and end at the same meeting location. We shuttle you from the meeting point to the river put-in, then from take-out back to your vehicle. Shuttles are included in the trip price. You only drive to/from the meeting location. Our drivers are professional, friendly, and know all the local river lore—the shuttle ride is part of the experience!

On wider rivers (South Fork), rafts accommodate up to 8 guests plus a guide. On narrower, technical rivers (Middle Fork, North Fork), capacity is 6 guests plus guide to ensure optimal maneuverability and safety.

We prioritize keeping families, corporate teams, and friend groups together whenever possible. However, if your group exceeds the maximum capacity for a specific river (e.g., 7 people on the Middle Fork with a 6-person max), you’ll be divided across multiple rafts for safety. Individuals booking separately should notify us to guarantee reservations are linked.

Restrooms are available at all put-ins, lunch stops, and take-outs. On multi-day trips, we provide portable toilet facilities with privacy at camp if we are camping where there isn’t a restroom. Nature calls? We’ve got you covered!

Yes. Everyone who joins us signs a standard adventure travel industry waiver. If under 18, your waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. We’ll send the waiver electronically before your trip—just complete it online. Questions about the waiver? Call 888-723-8938.

Absolutely! Most of our guests have never rafted before. Your guide provides all necessary information through thorough safety and paddle briefings plus hands-on training. Rafting is a fun team activity great for all experience levels. We’ll teach you everything you need to know!

Our guides are highly qualified professionals trained in Wilderness First Aid, CPR, and Swiftwater Rescue Techniques. In the unlikely event of an accident, guides have experience managing a huge variety of medical situations—from a broken fingernail to serious injuries. We carry comprehensive first aid kits, a satellite phone or cell phone, and have the ability to evacuate if necessary.

No problem! Part of your group can raft the Middle/South Forks Combo, and the rest can raft just the South Fork. You’ll all be at the same campground and raft together onthe  South Fork for one day. Perfect solution!

It varies by fork! South Fork has Class II-III rapids (family-friendly), Middle Fork has Class III-IV rapids (intermediate), and North Fork has Class IV-V rapids (advanced). Each fork offers a different adventure level!

Satan’s Cesspool is one of the most famous rapids on the South Fork American River! It’s a Class III rapid with big waves and a swirly hole that gives it the dramatic name. Don’t worry—it’s more fun than scary, and our guides navigate it all the time. It’s on our Gorge, Gorge Express, and Full River trips!

Yes! The American River is famous for gold—this is where the California Gold Rush started in 1848. You can pan for gold at designated areas, including around Coloma. We can point you to good spots! Some guests bring pans and try their luck during lunch breaks. You might just strike gold!

The South Fork is where gold was first discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, sparking the Gold Rush! While all three forks have gold, the South Fork around Coloma is the most historically significant and still has recreational panning opportunities. The Middle and North Forks flow through more remote wilderness areas.

“White water” refers to the frothy, aerated water created when a river flows over rocks and drops—it looks white and foamy! The faster and more turbulent the water, the “whiter” it appears. Calm water looks dark or clear, while rapids create that characteristic white, bubbly appearance. Pretty cool, right?
