California Salmon River Class IV+ to V at normal flows; 2 day trip; 2 sections totalling 20 miles Welcome to W.E.T. River Trips and RAFTWET.com Cal Salmon is 3 hours from Ashland, OR, 5.5 hours from Sacramento, CA, 6.5 hours from San Francisco and 8 hours from Portland, OR. A Northern California rafting Class 5 river for the extreme paddler is waiting for the experienced rafter! From mid-March through June, the Salmon pulses with Class 4 and 5 rapids throughout its length. Similar to the pristine flows on the North Fork American River, the Cal Salmon also boasts large house-sized boulders, intense gradient, and a healthy display of geology!
METHODIST: Above the Class V stuff is the Class 3+ to 4, 10-mile section from Methodist Creek to Norheimer Creek that can be added to a trip to extend a two or one day depending on a groups' preference & ability. This is a great run to test your skills before the 2nd day at Nordheimer. NORDHEIMER: From the put-in at Nordheimer to Wooley Creek, you will cover approximately 14 miles of awesome rapids such as Class 4+ Bloomer Falls, Airplane Turn, Cascade, Achilles, Butler's Ledge, Surfer's Alley, Double Hole and Highway. A third of the way through the day, you encounter the Class V combination of Last Chance and Freight Train aka Grant's Bluff: a solid quarter mile of Class 5 acceleration, deep holes, and ponding waves. Last Chance and Freight Train together are the approximation of four Tunnel Chutes and six Troublemakers combined with three Meatgrinders: No falling out allowed! The Freight Train section (Nordheimer to Butler) is so intense that your guides may elect to take the run the second day after a run from Butler to Oak Bottom. BUTLER: The Butler to Oak Bottom section is not to be taken lightly either. Immediately, this section starts off with a ledge-hole-wrap rock called Butler ledge and enters into the best geology of the trip with a tight canyon between multi-colored bands of rock interspersed with waterfalls and tributaries. The pace is constant and fast through a hammering fist of Class IV+ action. SIDEBAR: It is the only whitewater river in the West where you will see a river run UP a canyon (you'll see this when the Salmon River meets Wooley Creek!). It's that kind of non-stop action, scenery, and unique conditions that attracts the most hardcore paddling enthusiast! The Salmon runs through the "Lost Corner" of California just below the Oregon border and only 60 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean after the Salmon joins the Klamath and Trinity Rivers while flowing through the sacred lands and waters of the Karuk, Haruk, and Hoopa Tribes. There is magic and isolation combined with the convenience of paved roads and the care of the US Forest Service that adminsters the Six Rivers National Forest. We offer to you the understatement: "The Salmon is worth drive!" The reality is the Salmon is worth ANY drive! Cal Salmon is an ideal Class 4+ to Class 5 rafting trip for the experienced paddler. We recommend trips on the North Fork American, Tuolumne, Yuba and others before you head up to do this Northern California rafting trip near the California-Oregon border. Pristine water and untouched wilderness, this is the river trip of your dreams. Disclaimer: W.E.T. reserves the right to modify this trip based on your abilities.
